Fighting for Joy

The storm is raging ‘round the boat;
I feel as though it cannot float.
The sky is black, though it is day;
The deck is drenched with ocean-spray.

But through the wind I hear a sound,
A voice that echoes all around:
“Peace, be still, O troubled heart.
I’m here and I will not depart.

“I love you more than you can know--
That’s why I caused the winds to blow:
To show you that you’ll never find
True peace, nor joy, apart from Mine.

“There is a rest that comes from Me;
It’s calmer than the calmest sea.
There is a joy that brings you light
Even in the darkest night.

“So look to Me for your delight,
Though sometimes this will be a fight.
You have a foe who tries to steal
Each ray of happiness you feel.

“But, joy is more than what you feel--
True joy is something he can’t steal.
So root your heart deep in My love,
And set your mind on things above.

“I’ll give you joy when Me you seek,
For I exalt the one who’s meek.
This storm will pass, and then you’ll see:
True joy is found resting in Me.”
