Wasted Love

At a store yesterday, I heard a song that started me thinking.

"I don't want my love to go to waste..."

the song says.

I realized how selfish and proud this attitude is.  It's conditional love.  It expects its object to meet a certain standard.

Isn't it wonderful that our Lord does not love in this way?  He loves us because He is love, not because we have a "beautiful soul" (to quote the song once more).

The hymn writer Charles Wesley spoke of wasted love in his hymn "Depth of Mercy."  There is a real sense in which God wastes His love on us, for we will never deserve it.  But there is another reality that His love is not wasted, for His love changes us into something beautiful.

God is love!  Think on that for a long while.
